Latin Dance Lessons - Rhumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive.

If you are just starting out, you could start with Samba or Rhumba. Then you can expand outward from there.

The teaching methods used at John Howardson Dance are based on the fact that not everyone has the same goals in learning to dance and progressing forward as everyone else.

Some dance students just want to learn for a wedding and do not expect to continue on with their dancing after that, at least for now. Other dance students want to dance semi regularly and steadily improve and be able to dance comfortably and respectfully at social events. Still other people take dancing very seriously and want to perform and compete and win medals and trophies. The point is that not everyone is the same. A good teacher should be able to understand this and help the student work towards his or her goals, while still offering suggestions on avenues that could be explored and worked towards.

Too often dance teachers train everyone the same. Then the student is made to either conform or give up. This scenario most often happens when the dance professionals are past competitors and are not certified. Sometimes, these professionals have no understanding of social dancing and what it is all about.

Their view of dancing is all relative to higher level dancesport competitions. With this situation, most students are weeded out and eliminated as in sports, or eventually give up using excuses like them being too busy with work to be able to continue at this time.

At John Howardson Dance, we take time in the lessons to get to know the individuals as people not dancesport machines. We alter the lessons to meet the dance students goals and aspirations instead of preparing them for competition whether they like it or not.
