What Is Siding?

Siding is the material used to protect the side of a building. Sometimes referred to as cladding, this material keeps a house’s structure intact and protects it from weather conditions such as rain, sleet, snow, wind, and even heat. Siding also stands up to insects and birds that may want to take a nibble on the side of your house.

What Are The Different Types Of Siding?

Generally siding comes in the form of vinyl, aluminum, and steel. It is also available in wood or concrete, although these materials are not very commonly used in Southern Ontario. The type you choose for your own home will often depend on the overall aesthetics of the property. If you are constructing a new home, we can help you decide which type of siding will work best.

Aluminum

This type of siding is generally found on newer homes. It offers excellent insulation and is water resistant and fireproof. It is lightweight, easy to install, and can last up to 30 years. The only downside to aluminum siding is that because it is so lightweight it can dent and scratch easily. However, this shouldn’t deter you from having it installed in your home because it is quite simple to maintain, especially if you call a professional like us.

Vinyl

Vinyl siding comes in a variety of colours, with the most popular hues being white and beige. It is impact resistant and easy to maintain. Like its aluminum counterpart, vinyl siding is lightweight. However, it has a better ability to withstand denting and scratching, and also produces less visible blemishes if hit or scraped by a tree branch or wayward bird. Vinyl is also a very breathable material letting vapor escape should it become trapped inside.

Steel

Steel siding does not come in a wide array of colours but it does provide superior protection against the elements. Although each type of siding can protect against wind, rain and snow, steel sliding is generally better suited for larger buildings. It does not dent as easily as other materials and is easy to repair should it incur any damage. With proper maintenance, steel siding can last upwards of 30 years.
