Sisal is stronger than most other natural fibers, which makes carpets and rugs made from sisal very durable and lasting. Sisal has been used for thousands of years to make rugs and carpets. They generally will outlast synthetic fiber carpeting, while withstanding heavy traffic. Sisal will have a tendency to return to its natural color when exposed to prolonged or strong sunlight. In low humidity areas, sisal does not conduct static electricity as other carpeting does. It is a natural fiber made from the agave sisalana cactus plant which grows in semi-arid sections of Brazil, Mexico and Africa. Although sisal is not easily damaged by sand and dirt, it should be vacuumed often so that the dirt does not become embedded in the fibers.
