Hola and welcome to my page. My name is Miko Sobreira. I started teaching Salsa Dura in 1996, and have been a Dramaturgy Coach since 2001. When I arrived in Toronto to participate in the Fida Dance Festival, the farthest thing from my mind was to teach salsa. But once I realized that the way we dance in Venezuela is nothing like how it is taught here, I became a Salsa Dura teacher.
I had the luxury of growing up in Venezuela, Mexico and Spain. I enjoyed the way of life in small Afro-Venezuelan towns, as well as in the ghettos of twelve cities in eight different provinces. In Mexico it was the chaotic and yet magical urban culture that I loved. The various musical influences of Spain shaped me as the dancer and teacher that I am today.
All three countries provided me with the tools I needed to develop my performing, teaching and coaching careers. Along with the ancestral richness of Spain, Mexico had intense, raw realism and I had constant exposure to Venezuelan street culture, with it’s rich Afro roots and its colourful physicality.
Miko Sobreira has shared his salsa dura style since his arrival in Toronto in 1994. This particular type of salsa focuses on the musicality and its dynamics in a street manner. With this approach, anyone can understand the essence of salsa.
Miko has been teaching in high schools, private studios, festivals, and shows across Canada, including the last nine years at Lula Lounge. He also works as a Social Worker at the YMCA.
Every Sunday, Lula Lounge offers a salsa brunch party featuring traditional Cuban dance music and a beginner salsa lesson by Miko Sobreira. Catch a rendition with traditional Cuban dance music led by Luis Mario Ochoa.
